It is his third album of solo work issued by ECM, a Munichbased label (distributed here by Polydor specializing in younger musicians with progressive and avant‐garde styles. The newest Jarrett album is “The Köln Concert” (ECM 1064/65), a two‐LP set that documents his long solo piano forays recorded in Cologne, Germany, last January. And in a business where almost every artist is contractually chained to one record company (which normally claims “world rights” to that music), Jarrett maintains two separate recording identities and careers, one in America and one in Europe, with two competing labels, Impulse and ECM. In an era of amplified jazz‐rock, which emphasizes rifting rather than improvisation, Jarrett has been crusading for the traditional acoustic approach. Pianist Keith Jarret is young (30) and something of an anomaly.

However, the past three years have seen the startling ascent of another Miles Davis alumnus, from accomplished sideman into an innovative musician. Perhaps that role should have fallen again on Miles Davis, Coltrane's onetime mentor, but of late Miles's rhythm‐crazy young hands have been doing most of his talking for him.

Since the death of John Coltrane in 1967 the jazz world has been bereft of a major figure, one visionary musician whose style of playing and compositions earn the awe of colleagues yet whose records can still sell enough to support the experimentation vital to the evolution of contemporary music.
